‘Unexplained, persistent or relapsing fatigue’ for six or more months is the usual definition used for M.E/C.F.S. Fibromyalgia usually has a similar definition with unexplained pain being one of the symptoms.
There are a very broad spectrum of criteria used for diagnosis of these conditions and a diagnosis of such conditions is essentially one of exclusion. A patient will go to the doctors with a collection of symptoms, then the doctor will run tests and find nothing medically wrong with them. Symptoms vary greatly between each person suffering with the condition and there are no set tests for diagnosis and no cure that is recognised by the medical profession. However, if you ask any person who is suffering or has suffered from any of these debilitating conditions/symptoms, they will tell you that it is very real and that being told there is nothing medically wrong with them is almost without exception, not helpful.
The specific causes or triggers of such conditions vary greatly between each case but it boils down to one thing…Your body has been out of balance for too long. This can be caused by a number of factors, not least of which is a deficiency in the functioning of the adrenal glands. Your adrenal glands secrete finely balanced doses of hormones that help keep your body functioning. One of the primary functions of the adrenal system is to help your body to cope with stress and survive. It controls your fight or flight response which is instinctively built into us for survival and is obviously vital. In modern day life it is not unusual for us to be engaged in our fight or flight response for far more of the time than we are designed to be. Our body does not recognise the difference between actual threat and perceived threat. So whereas our ancestors would only be using their fight or flight response for dealing with predators for that 30 seconds or so when they encounter them, these days we can spend a large portion of our day locked in the fight or flight response for all sorts of things like work deadlines, money worries, relationship pressures etc. This combined with the stresses that a modern day diet and environment and its associated deficiencies and toxins can put on the body can all lead to depletion of adrenal hormones. Food intolerances and other digestive disorders can also be a major contributing factor to your body being under stress and out of balance.
A deficiency in the function of the adrenal glands will invariably cause fatigue, but the other symptoms surrounding that fatigue will vary depending on the person and their environment. A problem in the adrenal system can have knock on effects in almost all of our other body’s systems, depending on the severity of the adrenal deficiency. All of your cells and systems are affected by a release of adrenal hormones and over stimulation can result in a depletion and subsequent symptoms.
Simply put, the way we think affects our entire body and how it functions and feels. Also the fuel we give to our body and the way the food is absorbed is vitally important for restoring and maintaining good health.
The good news is that with the right information, understanding and practice, all of this can be avoided or reversed.
